Minutes of November 2015 Meeting
Oklahoma Space Alliance met at Earl’s Rib Palace in Moore on November 14. Attending were Steve, Karen and Brian Swift, Kay Ferrell, Cliff and Claire McMurray, John Northcutt, Tim Scott, Dave Sheely, Rachelle Thibodeau, and Syd Henderson.
We started the meeting with an Inc. interview with Elon Musk of SpaceX.
Dave Sheely talked about Space Fence: a Space Surveillance Radar program, and about space Debris. Much was left by a deliberate Chinese anti –satellite test in 2007. On February 10, the Iridium 33 and Kosmos-2251 satellites collided at a speed of 26,170 mph, creating at least 1000 pieces of space debris at least 4 inches in diameter. There are about 2317 pieces of space debris of trackable size, of which 2087 have been catalogued. There may be as many as 100,000 pieces of orbital space debris the size of a golf ball or larger.
Space Fence would track space debris orbiting between 160 and 30,000 km (100 to 18,000 miles) with ten times better resolution than we have now, and track more than 200000 objects.
Tinker Air Force Base is the designated supply organization. Space Fence Radar requires thirty-five USAF engineers and techs. Lockheed Martin will also have Space Fence employees.
What’s Happening in Space: Most of the material covered during this part of the meeting is now on line at http://osa.nss.org/1511%20Whats%20Happening.pdf, so I’ll just cover the highlights.
NASA has postponed the awarding of Commercial Cargo 2 until next year. Still in consideration are SpaceX, Orbital Science and Sierra Nevada. (The first two have the current contract.) Boeing has been dropped from consideration.
SpaceX will be launching eleven small satellites for Orbcomm on one Falcon 9 sometime in December [no earlier than December 15, according to Wikipedia].
OSA member Dennis Wigley has published more space photos. You can see two of them in the October Update.
You can find a listing of all 2015 launches at http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_chr/lau2015.htm. Although this site is in Germany, the list is in English.
We watched a video for Deep Space Industries.
Dave Sheely will be making a presentation at Tinker Air Force Base.
We have a total of $1231.15 in the treasury, including the checking account and cash box.
Nominations for officers are: Steve Swift, President; Dave Sheely, Vice-President; Syd Henderson, Secretary; Tim Scott, Treasurer. Additional nominations will be accepted through December 1, at which time Syd will send out ballots by snail mail. [E-mail ballots go out a few days later.]
We also need to formally elect a chapters representative to attend Chapters Assembly. Attendance can now be by Skype. Dave Sheely is assembly representative.
Our Christmas Party is December 12 at the Koszoru’s. This will be a potluck except for turkey. Time is tentatively 5:00 p.m.
Annual report is due February 15. We also need to have a meeting to recreate our bylaws, and that will be January 2.
